Movies are planned more than year in advance, and so reflect social mood from a year or two ago. Both superhero films have a dark theme and civil war. Box office receipts are reflective of current mood. Money Monster can be compared to The Big Short, which racked up $70 million with a star studded cast last year. The Big Short and The Wolf of Wall Street, which earned $116 million in 2013, were both sold as comedies. Both The Big Short and Money Monster were filmed in early 2015.
