“This is going to be fought out with lawsuits, with court decisions, and, dare I say it, maybe even in the streets,” Donohue said. Those comments are from the Catholic League, not the Catholic Church itself, but bishops have also been speaking out:
Bishop: New Mandate Goes Against Catholicism. However, many Catholics are asking, why now? The Church tolerated everything up until now, this is just one more brick in the wall.
The answer is socionomics. Social mood is negative and people are looking for fights. During rising social mood, the Catholic Church couldn't have fought even if it wanted to, because social mood was rising and people wanted to get along. Now as social mood falls, the exact same cultural trends that have been in force for 50 years have become a "war on religion." Absolutely nothing has changed about America. You could find people in the 1960s who opposed using government funds for contraception and said there was a war on religion—they were derided as crazy all through the 70s, 80s, and especially the 90s as social mood peaked. Recall how Pat Buchanan's 1992 convention speech about a "culture war" was received by the majority of Americans. Now, even presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has spoken of a "war on religion" and it helped him rise in the polls.
The negative social mood is also hurting the Church though. Many Catholics are angry at the Church for not fighting sooner. Catholic Church Hypocrisy: Obamacare
Exactly when did this happen? Was it when Obama announced forced "charity" in the form of mandatory health "insurance"? Was it when the government passed EMTALA in the 1980s, and forced everyone in the country to pay the hospital bills for those who refused -- or were unable -- to pay on their own? Was it when Congress and the government effectively added insult to this injury when it started whacking Medicare and Medicaid payments, forcing everyone else to pay? Or was it when all of this, plus the "free money lottery" game in the medical field, was imposed on every man, woman and child in America? That said, some bishops are stepping up the rhetoric: Pa. Bishop Does Not Recant Saying that Hitler And Mussolini 'Would Love Our (Public School) System'
Why no. The Catholic Church had no problem with that whatsoever. Organized theft at literal government gunpoint was just fine, so long as what was stolen, and why, met with Church approval.
“In the totalitarian government, they would love our system,” McFadden said. “This is what Hitler and Mussolini and all them tried to establish -- a monolith; so all the children would be educated in one set of beliefs and one way of doing things.”Expect more rhetoric and more calls for battle as social mood declines.
